TREA MARTYN

I make pictures inspired by the natural world.

About seven years ago, I found my way back to painting— by accident. One summer, I signed up for an oil painting course at Phoenix Art Space in Brighton. That changed everything.

Although drawing has always been a part of my life, I was more of an observer than a maker for many years.

My background is in English Literature — I  completed a PhD on Alexander Pope, which led me to explore 18th-century gardens. This research eventually led to teaching landscape and garden history, and later writing a book on  Elizabeth I’s love of gardens, ‘Elizabeth in the Garden’ (Faber and Faber).

Over the past year, I’ve been making prints from watercolour paintings and water-soluble graphite drawings, often focusing on trees and beach scenes. Each piece is an evolution of the original artwork.

Thank you for taking the time to explore my work. I hope you find something for you.

BECOMING AN ARTIST AGAIN

I make pictures inspired by the natural world.

I sketch every day, sometimes just a line or two.

Thank you for taking the time to explore my work. I hope you find something you enjoy.
